UPSC has conducted Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2020, comprising of General Studies Paper-I and Paper-II on 04 October 2020. Both the papers of Preliminary Examination are objective and carry 200 Marks each along with a negative marking of one-third of marks carried by that question. Candidates are required to score only 33% marks in General Studies Paper-II as it is qualifying in nature.
General Studies Paper I cover questions from important national and current international events, Indian history and Indian national movement, physical, social, economic Indian and world geography, constitution, political system, Panchayati raj, public policy, and rights issues in Indian polity and governance. Additionally, the paper covers economic and social development, general issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change, and general science. On the other hand, General Studies Paper-II tests comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision making, problem-solving, general mental ability, and basic numeracy of the CSE aspirants.
UPSC selects candidates for CSE Mains based on cutoff in GS Paper I of CSE Prelims.
The analysis of UPSC Prelims cutoffs for the last five years UPSC CSE Prelims shows that cutoffs of UPSC Prelims or minimum qualifying marks during 2015 to 2018 have declined continuously. However, UPSC Prelims cut-off or minimum qualifying marks for general category in the year 2019 did not decrease. They remained same as the cut-off marks for general category in year 2018. Category wise cut offs from last five UPSC CSE prelims (2015-2019) as disclosed by UPSC are provided below.
